Why Santa Barbara, the American Riviera, should be on your must visit list

Updated: Sep 3

What do you get when you combine Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, ocean views, Mediterranean climate, and world-renowned wineries? My happy place: Santa Barbara. On my recent trip, I had the pleasure of experiencing two of the area’s luxury properties – The Belmond El Encanto and San Ysidro Ranch - and some newfound favorite wineries.

One the building at San Ysidro ranch covered in flora

Perfect for:

  • A milestone birthday, family celebration, or anniversary splurge ($$$$)

  • Those craving absolute privacy with the perks of being a short drive to downtown Montecito and Santa Barbara

  • Garden enthusiasts

  • Anyone looking to stay put at one property and not have to worry about the cost of meals as they are all included in your stay

San Ysidro Ranch's cottages are the epitome of rustic elegance, blending classic charm with modern luxury. Each of the 38 cottages feature a cozy fireplace, French doors that open to sweeping view of the surrounding mountains or gardens, an outdoor shower, and a hot tub. My favorite cottage is the Churchill, aptly named after Winston Churchill who stayed in the cottage to write one of his many books.

The grounds themselves are a botanical paradise, 550 acres to be exact, with meandering paths through lavender fields, a rose garden, ancient oaks, and the chef’s vegetable garden. Of course, there is a pool and spa, but what surprised me most is the mini golf course. I have never been to a luxury property that has one on-site. And for my golf enthusiasts who need more than putt-putt, the hotel can reserve a tee time at the nearby Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, part of the exclusive Montecito Club.

Perfect for:

  • Travelers seeking laid-back California luxury ($$$)

  • Couples, families, friend’s getaways – everyone!

  • Similar to San Ysidro, a hillside hidden gem, but minutes from downtown Santa Barbara

The Belmond El Encanto first opened its doors in 1918 and quickly became a destination for artists, celebrities, U.S. Presidents, and the carriage trade from the East Coast. Fast forward more than 100 years and the hotel is still synonymous with Santa Barbara luxury.

There are 92 rooms built as bungalows, both California Mission style with traditional red-tiled roofs, and classic, earthy California Craftsman. Entry level rooms (my room type during this trip) offer a small balcony while suites have a patio and outdoor seating. Each room comes with a fireplace, deep soaking tub, and complimentary mini-bar treats.

Across the hotel's 7 acres, you’ll encounter the original 1928 wishing well, a wisteria-lined lily pond, the pool with ocean views, fire pits, and outdoor games. If that isn’t enough, the hotel aims to create a convivial environment with their added experiences, such as Gin & Jazz Thursdays and Lunch with an Author.

Pro tip: At both properties, my clients get VIP treatment, special amenities, resort credit, and room upgrade when available!

Just over an hour drive from either property lies the heart of California's Central Coast wine country, home to some truly amazing wineries and great spots for a meal. With the guidance of a oenophile friend (shout out to Evan K.), I explored two of these wineries and returned home with a generous collection of bottles, a perfect reminder of why this region is ideal for unwinding.

To enhance your stay, I can arrange a driver, curate a lunch experience, and provide a tailored list of wineries to visit. Whether you're a seasoned wine lover or just looking to discover new flavors, it's the perfect way to immerse yourself in the beauty and taste of the Central Coast
